Blue stone patio: paving slabs and setts from the Hazotte quarry

In short. Hazotte is a family quarry of natural and reclaimed stone, located between Nandrin and Tinlot in the Condroz, with its head office in Tavier. For a blue stone patio, we supply new or reclaimed paving slabs in made-to-measure sizes, as well as sawn setts and square setts. Everything is on quotation. We deliver in Belgium, to neighbouring countries and worldwide, including the United Kingdom.

Which blue stone for a patio?

Our blue stone is a compact crinoidal limestone with a grey-blue colour, also known as Petit Granit, from the Soignies, Ourthe-Amblève and Bocq basins. Its pale fossils stand out against a background that ranges from light grey to black depending on the finish. When exposed to the weather, the stone lightens.

For blue stone paving, there are three options:

  • Blue stone patio slabs, new or reclaimed: made-to-measure sizes, standard or made-to-measure thicknesses, on quotation.
  • Sawn blue stone setts: sawn top face, 15 x 15 cm, 6-9 cm or 9-12 cm thick. Their product sheet lists patios, driveways and pool surrounds.
  • Square blue stone setts, new or reclaimed, 15 x 15 cm or 17 x 17 cm, 12-15 cm, 13-16 cm or 14-17 cm thick.

Blue stone slabs or setts: which should you choose?

A slab is ordered to the dimensions of your patio. Sawn setts give a crisp, straight-lined look; according to their product sheet, their narrow joints limit weed growth. Reclaimed square setts are weathered. The choice depends on the use: a patio for walking on, a driveway, a pool surround.

Which finish for a blue stone patio?

Blue stone patio slabs come in five finishes:

  • sawn: a smooth surface; the sawn setts product sheet mentions great comfort underfoot;
  • flamed: according to the sawn setts product sheet, this treatment makes the surface non-slip, even in wet weather;
  • honed;
  • cleft;
  • weathered.

Why choose a local quarry?

Hazotte is a second-generation family quarry, active for more than 40 years. It holds the “Pierre Locale” label and runs as a zero-waste quarry. We aim for 100% local. Part of our blue stone comes from reclamation: the slabs and square setts are also available in this version.

What if I prefer a sandstone patio?

Condroz sandstone is available as 15-45 x 15-45 cm flagstones, 3 to 6 cm thick. Its product sheet describes it as naturally slip-resistant, with a very wide range of colours, from green-grey to blue-grey and from ochre to rust-brown.
